Our historical building is traditional; our services are contemporary.
Established in 1853, the original portion of the building was located north of the railroad tracks . It was moved and added onto in 1925 and again in 1966. The move is an interesting story involving horses and logs. Click here to learn more about it.
In 2006 our current pastor, Mark Trump, came to Union Grove as part of a two point assignment. During the past 4 years we’ve redefined our mission and core values as well as incorporated many contemporary elements into our services. |

What is contemporary worship?
Traditional and contemporary worship are not determined by what songs you sing. A contemporary worship service can include older songs. In fact, that’s often the case at our church.
The opportunity to get centered on God is the fundamental difference between contemporary and traditional worship. “Flow” and “connection” are the two descriptors that distinguish a contemporary worship service from a traditional style of worship. “Flow” is used to describe the way the worship transitions from one activity to the next. It depends on a continuity of activity, with more gentle transitions.
But the more important characteristic of contemporary worship is “connection”. It is during the quieter, more intimate worship that people make the connection with God. It is this communion, in the fullest sense of the word, that is the ultimate goal of worship.
God did not create man just to praise Him, although that is one of the highest callings of man. God created man to live in fellowship with Him. It is in these times of spiritual intimacy that we have the fullest example of this state in this life. It is also in these times that God the Holy Spirit performs surgery on our hearts. He comforts us, convicts of sin, calls us forward, reveals His love and sometimes even His plans for us.
What contemporary worship looks like for us at UGUMC is worship that is centered on creating an atmosphere of connection with God and a sense of the Holy Spirit moving in and through us. We use some of the classic hymns, some of which are in a contemporary form, as well as songs from the David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, Daryl Evans, Jeremy Camp, and Matt Redman to name a few artists.
Are you thinking of visiting and wondering what to wear or have questions? When you visit, you will find people dressed in a wide variety of styles from as casual as jeans or shorts to a smaller number dressed more formally. Most people find themselves somewhere in the middle, just be sure to dress so that you will be relaxed and able to get the greatest possible impact from our service.
We offer programs for your children (see more detail on the Youth Programs link on the “Get Connected” link) as well as additional opportunities for you to join in fun and interesting activities and get to know other members of the congregation. We’re a very diverse group of people and would love the opportunity to meet you and your family! If you’d feel more comfortable in a smaller setting, feel free to attend one of our events.
And if you have specific questions, we’d be happy to answer them. Just give us a call, send us an email, or visit us on Facebook!
